基本观点为：Translation can be roughly defined as a reproduction or recreation in one language of what is written or said in another language.
但不同的学者对翻译有不同的定义.
语言学观点：Translation may be defined as the replacement lf textual material in one languge (the source languge ) by eauivalent textual material in another language (the target languge ) (Catford 1965:20)
文化观点：Translation is a process which occurs between cultures rather than simply between languges (Siuttleworth & Cowie 1997: 35)
文学观点：Translation is an artistic recreation or a recreated art.
语义学观点：Translation is randering the meaning of a text into another languge in the way that the author intened the text (Newmark 1988: 5)
功能论观点：Translation is a specific form of human action with a certain purpose, a kind of linguistic service provided to the society.
交际学观点：Communication translation is generally oriented towards the needs of the target languge reader or recipient.
