Logistics professionals have mostly been trained to be forward focused.They are learning,however,that a firm can realise dramatic cost savings by applying forward-focused processes to optimize reverse logistics operations.A study by the analyst firm Aberdeen Group indicates that reverse logistics in the developed economies like the United States costs companies roughly $100 billion per year.Other studies point to the fact that reverse logistics costs account for approximately 4% of a company’s total logistics costs.This suggests that reverse logistics is no small matter in the supply chain and needs to be addressed.
Oakden and Leonite (2011) define reverse logistics as “the process of handling items as they travel back through a supply”.Murphy and Wood (2011) put forward three critical factors reverse logistics should focus on.They include why products are returned,how to optimize reverse logistics and whether reverse logistics should be managed internally or outsourced to a third party.Murphy and Wood (2011) argue that four (4) principal types of economic utility add value to a product or service.They include possession utility,form utility,place utility,and time utility.
