=The sales department used to be a guy next to the phone

记住：and 前后不一定都要成分相同.这里next to the phone和waiting for it to ring都是修饰a guy起到定语作用的.所以and这里连接的是两个定语.
waiting for it to ring的作用和你问的第一道题是一样的.分词作定语,因为修饰的是人,所以用ing形式.

一种是：ed表示被动和已经完成的动作,ing表示主动和进行时态,这就要看主语或被修饰成分是人还是物.
如果主语或被修饰成分为人,那么用ing形式,如果为物,则用ed形式来表示“被”怎么怎么样.
如:Its newly acquired factory.
这里acquired修饰的是后面的factory,当然工厂是被需求了,不可能工厂自己需求自己吧,所以用ed被动的形式.
另一种：这个比较简单.
举例：It's boring.和I'm bored.
这种和前面那种不一样.物用ing,人用ed.
形容事物无聊的时候用boring,形容人无聊用ed.
你之前说的surprise,please是这一类的,一般都是表示感情色彩的,像什么高兴啊,无聊啊之类,请注意与第一类的区分.
